There are also some really outstanding singers. For someone who purports to be a writer of lyrics, one doesn’t have to look very far to be inspired.
For many years Ewan Svensson in particular has been a source of inspiration for me in his capacity as a guitarist and composer, and the same goes for the very accomplished singerLinda Pettersson Bratt with her special, varm vocal timbre.
On this CD you will hear fifteen highly original compositions by Ewan to which I have written words. On nine of the tracks they
are joined by the celebrated French pianist Antoine Hervé. His reputation as a world-class pianist in several genres is highlighted here. The other members of Ewan’s trio, bassists Yasuhito Mori (the 2007 session) and Mattias Grönroos (the 2009 session) and the always-imaginative drummer Magnus Gran acquit themselves as the true professionals they are.
The last track, “I Am Touched”, is just Ewan and Linda together. For my ears it is music in its purest, most poignant form and as such I would like to dedicate this title to the memory of a great friend and supremely gifted musician, the British composer/arranger/pianist Steve Gray who left us far too prematurely in 2008 and whose music never left me unmoved.
Sincere thanks to everyone involved in this project for the enthusiasm and commitment they have all shown. And I hope you the listeners will find that the songs have an inclination to stay in your head after hearing them a few times. If they do, that means we have all made a worthwhile contribution to the cause of the contemporary song form.”
Dave Castle
April 2010

DIG MAGAZINE
Convincing singing in inspired company
Ewan Svensson Trio
With Linda Pettersson Bratt and Antoine Hervé
Sunrise On The Moon
(Dragon Records/Border)
* * * *

Guitarist Ewan Svensson is a melodic composer of class, which is evident in this successful collaboration with singer Linda Petersson Bratt. His compositions have been given lyrics by Dave Castle, who has often been called upon when Swedish singers choose to sing in English.
Together with an inspiring group of musicians from Gothenburg, Linda produces superb results in Ewan’s music. Sunrise On The Moon becomes a cool breeze in the warmth of summer when her graceful voice gives the melodies all the care and attention they deserve. Yasuhito Mori and Mattias Grönroos share the bass roles and Magnus Gran is the drummer. To these is added French pianist and Fender Rhodes player Antoine Hervé.
This ought to be the most significant recording that Linda has made to date. No wonder in such company. She sounds intimately convincing without being introvert. The CD has a subtlety that attracts respect and admiration where it is not only Ewan’s guitar playing that causes me to raise my eyebrows. All the musicians contribute their talents as part of the ensemble and as successful soloists. Hervé plays an important role in the total picture of the group as it comes into focus. Magnus Gran’s flexible drumming also deserves praise.
It is not only in the beautiful “Sunrise On The Moon” where the recording reaches its zenith. I don’t have a favourite track, it is the combined result of the whole album that I find satisfying. The final number, “I Am Touched” is performed by Ewan and Linda as a duo, which serves to further extend the attractive mood.
/Göran Olson

Excellent bass playing with Ewan Svensson Trio
SUNRISE ON THE MOON
* * * *
Guitarist Ewan Svensson and singer Linda Pettersson Bratt who have collaborated earlier are a well-functioning team. Now their collaboration has resulted in a new exciting CD with recordings from May 2007 and December 2009. This is a CD that should appeal to jazz enthusiasts everywhere.
Besides his talents as an instrumentalist, Ewan Svensson is an extremely gifted composer with a wide range of variation in his compositions. The former alto saxophonist Dave Castle has written excellent lyrics to all the material on this CD.
After a rather less successful release on record with Swedish folk music Linda, with this album, is back on track. In her characteristically relaxed style, she interprets this material with fine balance, feeling and presence.
Ewan plays, as always, with technical dexterity and inspiration and the French pianist Antoine Hervé is not long after. Excellent bass playing can be heard shared between Yasuhito Mori and Mattias Grönroos. Magnus Gran provides drumming that is both adventurous and sure.
An enjoyable album all the way through. Recommended!
SUNDSVALLS TIDNING/ Hans-Erik Bergman

SUNRISE ON THE MOON
Ewan Svensson Trio with Linda Pettersson Bratt and Antoine Hervé
* * * *
Ewan Svensson from Falkenberg and Linda Pettersson Bratt are world-class. “Light & Shade” from 2005 is one of the few records that I have given the highest number of stars (5) and the long-awaited follow-up has the same balance of jazz, latin, ballads and blues – lyrical, easy to listen to and swinging without being predictable. Ewan Svensson and the brilliant singer Linda Pettersson Bratt are of world-class and she can easily hold her own with Viktoria Tolstoy or Rigmor Gustafsson.
Dave Castle has now written fine lyrics to thirty-four Ewan-originals and has saved only four words in the third chorus of “Tuesday Evening” when it became “Busy Me”. Five of fifteen compositions are extra new because they have never even been recorded instrumentally before.
When “Thanks” is here done in a fourth variation, Ewan shines on acoustic guitar as he also does in “Shy” (where the original “Late Evening” is called “Late Meeting”). In the title song Linda sings the high notes crystal-clear and with an attractive huskiness, but in a few other places she sounds slightly strained. In the songs from 2007 I sometimes miss the French pianist Antoine Hervé.
HN/ Martin Erlandsson

ORKESTER JOURNALEN
Ewan Svensson Trio with Linda Pettersson Bratt and Antoine Hervé
SUNRISE ON THE MOON
* * *
Ewan Svensson is not only a magnificent guitarist, he is also a talented composer. On the new Dragon CD “Sunrise On The Moon” he presents fifteen original compositions with lyrics by Dave Castle who earlier has written meaningful lyrics to, among others, Rune Carlsson. Ewan Svensson’s compositions have a lyrical, melodic character. They are perhaps not songs you hum to yourself, they are more likely to be remembered for the mood they communicate.
What especially strikes me is Linda Pettersson Bratt’s vocal gifts. Few of our female singers can compare to her in my opinion. She sings with emotion without resorting to sentimentality and she performs the carefully crafted and demandingly difficult songs with impressive ease and sure intonation. As an example, listen to how she handles the wide intervals of the bebop-inspired “Absolutely You”!
On many of the tracks Ewan Svensson’s Trio is augmented by pianist Antoine Hervé who contributes playing totally appropriate to the mood of the album.
OJ/ Jörgen Östberg

SUNRISE ON THE MOON
Many years ago I was driving from Luleå along the E4 on my way home to Stockholm. In the vicinity of Sundsvall I heard on the local radio an amazingly good girl singer accompanied by a fine swinging group. I actually drove into a lay-by so that could enjoy the broadcast without having to think about the other traffic. The singer who sang so beautifully turned out to be Linda Pettersson, a local talent who not many people even in Sundsvall had heard about, let alone me. That was, as I said before, several years ago. Nowadays her name is Linda Pettersson Bratt who with, if I remember rightly, four albums that have attracted much favourable attention as well as many live concerts behind her, elevated herself to the position of one of our best female jazz singers. On the new album “Sunrise On The Moon”, with original music by guitarist and composer Ewan Svensson, she augments Ewan Svensson’s finely-tuned trio along with pianist Antoine Hervé, one of the greatest names in French jazz today.
They make an unbeatable combination offering the listener small musical masterpieces throughout every track. Finally, praise is due also to Dave Castle for his sublime song lyrics that seem to have been written specially for Linda.
Smålänning/ Kåbe Lidén

SMÅLANDSPOSTEN
EWAN SVENSSON TRIO with LINDA PETTERSSON BRATT and ANTOINE HERVÉ
Sunrise on the Moon
(Dragon)
* * * *
In the Spring, Ewan Svensson released a particularly fine album with
standards and now it is time for yet another CD, this time with his
own compositions.
